As to how to tell the difference, well if you only have one cable, it can be a tiny bit hard.
Not all BIOSes can do this, and some just don't do it well. Via chipset BIOSes don't seem to be as acurate. If your drive is an ATA66 drive and you bought it retail in a kit that came with a cable then the cable is probably an 80 wire ata66 cable. ATA66 cables are also limited to 18 inches.
